KCA 12 Hour, David Greenwoods perspective.

This time it’s the thoughts of my man David Greenwood on the KCA 12 hour this year. Well done mate you were no trouble.

KCA 12HR 2015
David Greenwood Race Number 22 “He Who Dares, Rodney”

This being my first season of Time Trialling, why not cap it off with the 12HR? I was confident that I would have the mileage in legs having completed some long distance rides in the earlier in the year. Still unsure of what distance I would be capable off, “some talked of getting past the magic 200miles”, so that was to be my target. A support planning meeting was held with Paul Simpson in The Bull, where we discussed next year’s trips, drank beer and agreed he would be on the side of the road with drinks and bacon butties.
So, with a start time of 7.22 in near perfect conditions it was down to the Appledore-Rye loops, where the wind was kinder and if I was lucky I would pass Rye Wheelers heading out for their Sunday ride, this did happen and there was a shout of encouragement from the group.
After these loops turning back towards Rye then round to Lydd, was tough in the wind and rain. The planned support stops went well and with no mechanicals it was just a case of keeping the legs turning. I am also pleased to report Paul got in his well-deserved “Old Man’s Half Hour” around 2 o’clock. Completing my last and toughest Lydd and camber loop, I headed up to the finishing circuit starting these having been in the saddle for 9hrs 45 mins and 182 miles in my legs.
The support on the circuit was fantastic, so thanks to all that shouted encouragement. Each drag from Shadoxhurst was the lowest point of the ride for me, convinced I was into a head wind. I knew though that if I completed 4 laps in the time remaining I would go way past the 200 miles. So I pushed on and finished with a total distance of 219.7 Miles. This contributed to Rye Wheelers gaining 2nd place in the Team Event.
To finish with many thanks to all the organisers and marshals a great job done by all. A big thank you to Paul for supporting throughout the day and to those who came out to cheer and encouraged all the riders.
WELL DONE TO ALL WHO TOOK PART AND YES, I WILL BE THERE NEXT YEAR.
